Destination Nepal

Your friends in high places…

gosainkunda_lakeGosainkunda is a significant pilgrimage place Hindus.  It is located about 150 kilometers north of Kathmandu (117 km by bus and 11 hours on foot) in Rasuwa district at an elevation of 4380 metres. Langtang National Park keeps Gosainkunda in its lap. The holy lake is a two-day trek from Dhunche, which can be reached through an adventurous 118 km mountain road from Kathmandu.

According to Hindu legend, the lake was created by Lord Shiva when he thrust his Trishula (trident) into a mountain to extract water so that he could cool his stinging throat after he had swallowed poison. There is a large rock in the centre of the lake, which is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine. [Gosain means a monk and Kunda means a pool.] People often claim that they see Shiva lying in the water. Devotees gather here in hordes on the full moon night of August to take holy dips in the lake as well as during Janai Purnima, Thulo Yekadasi, Dassera and Maghe Sangkrati when huge festivals are held. It is believed that in the eastern and western side of the lake altogether nine lakes including Saraswotikunda, Suryakunda, Ganeshkunda Nagkunda, Bhairabkunda, Aamakunda etc exists.

The route via Tilicho Lake and the two passes (Masokanto La 5099 m and Tilicho Pass 5230 m) that guard it from the Kaligandaki Valley beyond is still used and offers the adventurous and fit trekker high mountain scenery at its very best. muktinath_tourMany Hindus dream of taking a holy bath at least once in their lifetime in the sacred Damodar-Kund, situated at the lap of the Himalayas in the Upper Mustang area of Nepal. Lord Krishna said that he who pays a visit to Kunda and takes a deep bath will be freed from all the sin. Thus we resolve you of sin with this tour.

It is also mentioned in Puran that two sons of Kubers were suffering from their wrongdoing and sin that were committed in a previous life.  Lord Krishna suggested they take a bath in this Kunda and immediately after taking a bath they were released from all their sin.

muktinath_templeIt is believed that all miseries / sorrows are relieved once you visit this temple (Mukti=Nirvana, Nath=God). The main shrine is a pagoda shaped temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Set into the wall around it are 108 waterspouts from which pour holy water.

For Tibetan Buddhists, Muktinath, they called Chumig Gyatsa (Hundreds Waters) is a place of Dakinis, goddesses known as Sky Dancers. It is of great importance for Buddhists that Chumig Gyatsa is one of the 24 Tantric places.

For Hindus, beside the natural fire representing Brahma and the holy waters, the central meaning of the Muktinath area is the veneration of the god Vishnu in the form of ammonites (shilas) called Salagrama-Shilas.  There are many stories that tell of Vishnu turning into stone and all of them are closely connected to the holy Kali Gandaki River. This river, also known as the Salagrami, is a few hours walk from Muktinath-Chumig Gyatsa.

Maktinath’s high mountain location and headwaters, as well as the presence of certain natural elements such as fossils and fires, have tempted man, in his search for god on earth, to create a supernatural field, a sacred world where Vishnu and other deities are believed to abide. At Muktinath, these include such wonders as fire burning on water and the fossils of primitive sea creatures (ammonites) found high in the mountains, many thousands of metres above sea level and thousands of kilometers from any contemporary ocean. It is safe to say that in the overall sacred environment, these natural/supernatural elements take on prime importance and are of considerable attraction to all pilgrims: Buddhist and Hindu alike. Alongside, the three natural elements at Muktinath — the spring water, natural gas fires and fossils — there is also a sacred grove of poplar trees of the species Populus ciliate, locally called lekh pipal or bhot pipal.

Location:
Muktinath is situated on the upper part of the Kali Rier of Buri Gandaki on the north side of the main Himalayan range and south of Lo-Manthang or Mustang. Its precise location is 29° 11’ N latitude and 83° 53’. longitude, at an elevation of 3,800 m (or approximately 12,500 ft) on the western slopes of the Damodar Himal and the northern extension of the Annapurna Himalayan massif.

Muktinath is in the high Himalayan arid zone bordering China’s Tibetan Autonomous Region (Xizang). This northern region of Nepal is often called Bhot (Tibet), and its inhabitants ‘Bhotia.’ Muktinath shrine is near the headwaters of the Jhong River, a tributary of the Kali Gandaki in the north-eastern corner of Thak Khola is a dry trans-Himalayan valley in Nepal’s Mustang District.
