Destination Nepal

Your friends in high places…

everest_base_campBeginning at Lukla, in the heart of the Khumbu region, this trek proceeds north up the Dudh Kosi Valley to Mache Bazaar, the major trading centre of the region. From Namche the trail follows the Imja Khola, with marvellous views on the way of Khumbu Himal, Thamserku and Kanteg with Amadablam in the distance and Everest and Lhotse dominating the skyline ahead. Trekking on upwards we eventually emerge above the tree-line before Dingboche.

Dingboche to Kalapatthar takes a further two days via the lateral moraine of the Everest glacier for a spectacular confrontation with the towering forms of Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse above.

From the Everest Base Camp we retrace to Lobuche and begin trekking westwards to the Gokyo Lake region via Cho-Lla pass. The relatively untravelled Gokyo Valley trail is dominated at its head by the overwhelming form of Cho Oyu (8153 m). From Gokyo, we ascend to Gokyo Ri, sometimes described as Nepal’s ultimate viewpoint, commanding awe-inspiring views of the vast Ngozumpa Glacier, Cho Oya with its neighbour Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest rising above a fluted ridge, Lhotse and Makalu.

We head out westwards to Renjo-La pass and after crossing here we trek to Thame village, which was the home of the young Tenzing Norgay, Everest’s famous pioneer Sherpa, eventually retracing to Lukla via the main trail.

Renjo-La PassAnother trek for those preferring to take the less-travelled route: this itinerary takes in the Gokyo Valley, dominated at its head by the massive and almost overbearing form of Cho Oyu (8153m), before ascending to Gokyo Ri, one of Khumbu’s most spectacular viewing locations. From this point there are great perspectives of the vast Ngozumpa Glacier, Cho Oyu itself with its neighbour Gyachung Kang, Mt Everest rising above a fluted ridge, Lhotse and Makalu.

After appreciating this amazing vista we head out westwards to the Rengo-La pass, which we cross in order to trek to Thame village. This is where Everest’s famous pioneer Sherpa Tenzing Norgay grew up.

There is a gomba perched on a steep hillside above the village. Thame, as much as any settlement in Khumbu, is off the tourist route, so you may even find yourself the only foreigner in town!

This is an adaptation of the Everest Base Camp trek for those who have enough time to trek to Lukla overland, rather than flying.

The beginning of this trek retraces the route of the earliest Everest expeditions through beautiful Alpine scenery. Most people find the extra seven days truly delightful, as well as providing good insight into traditions and lifestyles of the Tamang, Kami, Brahmin, Kshetri and Sherpa people who live here.

The overnight stop at Junbesi, Solu Khumbu’s oJiri ebc tourldest Sherpa settlement, is a real highlight. An hour’s hike above Junbesi is Tupten Chholing monastery, with the villages of Mabung and Pangkarma making for pleasant stops along the way.

From Lukla we follow the itinerary described in the details of our 14-day Everest Base Camp trek.

everest_bc_trekkingEverest Basecamp Trek (Lukla-Lukla)
Maximum altitude: 5545 mtrs.
Duration of trek: 14 days with accommadations in mountain lodges

The trek commences with an early flight from Kathmandu to the air strip at Lukla in the heart of the Khumbu Region. The rest of the day is spent on an easy trek of around three hours to our first overnight at Phakding. We continue north up the Dudh Kosi Valley to Namche Bazaar. Namche was once a small village, but is now the major trading hub of the region. Tibetan people travel regularly here to sell their wares. We wil spend a day here to acclimatize – there will be good food and accommodation.

From Namche the trail follows the Imja Khola, on route there are some spectacular views of the Khumbu Himal, Thamserku and Kantega with Amadablam in the distance, dominating the skyline ahead are Everest and Lhotse.
We spend the night at Thyangboche, the site of one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the Khumbu region, which we will visit. The trail ascends, climbing gradually up the Imja Khola eventually emerging above the tree line before Dingboche. Here we take time to further acclimatize with a side trek to Chhukung Ri (peak).

From Chhukung there are some amazing views of the south-face of Lhotse to the north with a ring of smaller peaks surrounding it. Dingboche to Kalapatthar takes a further two days via the lateral moraine of the Everest glacier and Nuptse and Lhotse which tower above. A further five days are taken retracing to Lukla and the flight back to Kathmandu. An attainable trek for anyone who is reasonably fit with the itinerary set to minimize any affects of altitude.
